Waiting for Godin
By Brandon Dawson on Jan 8, 2007 in Personal, Writing
Like many a marketing-oriented web geek before me, I’ve been reading a lot of Seth Godin lately.
And, in working on my own book, I’ve finally hit a stretch where I can play that same coy, mildly-detached, “let the picture say all the words” game he plays in his writing.
I can see why he enjoys it so much. Leaving so much unsaid can be an effective means of letting your readers fill in meaning for you.
It’s a bit of a crutch, for me, but it’s also effective copy writing. He leaves you wanting more, every single time. He keeps giving you the hint that you’re missing something he didn’t bother to explain because he deemed it obvious. Or did he?
I’m writing a segment on effective copywriting, and, since I’ve been a pretty fair writer for a fairly long time, I was having a hard time talking about something I generally approach from a more intuitive direction. Instead, I’m pulling a Godin.
In any event, it’s been a little while since I’ve been able to enjoy writing my book. A nice respite from the onslaught to come.

You can buy the book when it goes on sale, Seth.
It’s only fair. I’ve got two of yours.
Seriously, I’ll be posting some sample material soon, on publisher approval.
